Jean de Florette (France 1986, Cert PG) is director Claude Berri’s finest work. Depardieu and Auteuil are at their height as actors, and Berri’s widescreen panoramas of the beautiful yet harsh countryside are unforgettable.

Jean de Florette tells the tale of Jean (Depardieu), hunchback who inherits a small farm in rural France. After their attempt to buy the farm fails, Cesar and Ugolin (Montand and Auteuil) scheme to drive Jean away, but when the poor Ugolin and Jean become friends, the deception turns bittersweet.

Part two of this epic, Manon des Sources, will be shown by the Club in April.

£5.50, £4.50 conc.
