Main Hall - Multi-use arts space

Main uses: performing arts events, concerts, ceilidhs, parties, films, workshops, conferences and meetings

Accessibility: all public areas are wheelchair accessible (assistance available by prior arrangement), there is disabled parking, an induction loop is fitted, guide dogs are welcome. The stage and back-stage areas are accessible by wheelchair via the Lang Byre.

Floor area: the main part of the Barn is a rectangular space 23.6m by 11.1m. Performing area: normal set-up involves a stage at one end of the rectangular area.

Stage: 11.1m maximum width (wall to wall) x 5.3m depth x 2.75m - 3.5m height (N.B. there are two cross beams 2.75m above the front and rear of the stage and there is no side or rear stage area outwith these dimensions). The stage floor is approx 70 cm above the auditorium floor and is accessible by wheelchair from rear of stage. The stage comprises 27 sections, 2m x 1m each (CPS Alu Rapid sections). There are hand-drawn tabs at the front of the stage leaving an opening of approx. 7.5m by 2.75m when fully open.

Layout: the Barn can be arranged as required: performances can be on the stage or on the floor (Harlequin sprung dance floor) subject to sight lines etc and dependent upon expected audience numbers

Seating: flexible seating (none fixed) on one level; up to 240 seats maximum (for events on stage), including space for wheelchairs. Rake can be erected if required. Café style seating with tables and chairs is also possible up to about 150 capacity. If playing on the floor, the maximum audience is reduced to approx. 90.

Tables: 12x6' round tables (max 10 per table); 14x 6' rectangular tables (max 8 per table). Grand piano: a Boston Steinway 5' 10" grand (new in 1998) lives at the side of the stage. (Note: the piano weighs 275kgs and does not move off the stage).

The Lang Byre Gallery - visual art and workshop space

Main use: art gallery but also suitable for wedding ceremonies, workshops, meetings and occasional concerts.

  • Up to 50 seats (none fixed) including space for wheelchairs
  • Performing area is 4m x 4m x 3m maximum height, accessible by wheelchair
  • Low voltage gallery lighting to walls and floor (via 8 dimmer switches)
  • Underfloor heating
  • Electrical power points: 5 x 13 amp double sockets.

The Gallery is on three slightly different levels with single steps and moveable ramps between the levels. It is available for separate hire subject to other activities arranged in the Barn.

Kitchen

Area: approx. 5m x 4m; containing preparation and washing sinks; large fridge (no freezer); propane gas cooker (six rings and one oven); electric warming oven; movable table and dishwasher. Electrical power points:4 x 13 amp double sockets. N.B. No utensils or equipment are provided.
