Woodend Allotments
Please note: Woodend Allotments AGM will be held at the Woodend Barn on Sunday 25th April 2010 at 2.30pm. All are welcome.
WAA helped to create Woodend Allotments as an independent community group in 2006. Leys Estate generously agreed to lease a field behind the Barn and planning permission was obtained from Aberdeenshire Council in early 2007. Funds were raised to pay for deer and rabbit fencing and for a communal shed / summerhouse. The allotments opened in April 2007 and within two months were fully subscribed. There are currently some 65 plot holders, plus the primary school and two community groups.
By the summer of 2009, Woodend Allotments had a waiting list of over thirty people, so we approached Leys Estate to obtain another field for an extension of the allotments to the North of the existing field. Leys Estate kindly agreed and funding to fence the site and prepare the ground was obtained from the Climate Challenge Fund in November 2009. Planning permission for 45 new plots was obtained in February 2010 and the plots have recently been marked out. We are planning to plough the plots before handing them over to individual plot-holders in late April. Ploughing of the plots has been delayed somewhat due to the fact that all our local farmers are busy ploughing their own fields following the very cold and wet winter.
